Course Overview

This Extended Diploma is a one-year top-up study programme for students who already hold a Foundation Diploma that will develop your skills and prepare you for a career in the field of IT, web design, computer networks or associated industries. As part of your study programme, you will be expected to continue studying maths and English through either GCSE re-takes or Functional Skills, dependant on individual needs and qualifications already gained.
Additionally, you will also have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will study and use development software to create your very own network. The course will cover computer architecture and look at the hardware and how it interacts to form a computer system and platform. You will look at how a computer system is designed and what happens during operation. Virtualisation in networking and computer networking is also extensively covered using real routers and switches as well as using packet tracer.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of work or study. You are required to have 4 GCSEs grade 4 (C) or above to include English and maths. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

The qualification enables you to explore a choice of sectors in the IT industry. It also gives you the opportunity to continue onto higher education courses, apprenticeships or employment in the computing industry. Different types of positions and networking jobs in computer networks sector are Cybersecurity analyst, Network Technician, Network Administrator, Network Engineer, Computer support technician as well as analysts.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
