Course Overview

The course is designed for students who are 19+ and entails working with children in different settings. It focuses on current requirements of provision, based on legislation, for different settings and on workers’ responsibilities in professional care environments.
The level 3 diploma for the early years workforce. This qualification is designed to build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas and is split into two pathways: social care for children and young people and learning, development and support services.

The course is suitable for anyone who works or wants to work at a supervisory level in the children and young people’s workforce.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The course covers all aspects of childcare including equality and diversity, communication, legislation, child development, activities for children and many more.
Students must achieve 18 mandatory units which are split into different ‘themes’.
Theme 1: Health and well-being
Theme 2: Legislation, frameworks and professional practice
Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school readiness
Theme 4: Professional development

This programme comprises 64 credits. There is also the need to complete work placement hours. Work experience involves working in different settings for a minimum of 15 hours per week throughout the course and involves working with all age groups up to Nineteen years. These will contribute to a unit where a portfolio of evidence is built and you are assessed on your professional competency. It is important to note that you must be deemed competent to pass the course.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or equivalent is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and math’s qualifications.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is split between assignments and work placement competency assessments. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit. There are no traditional exams but you will be assessed in placement in a number of pre-arranged and planned visits.

Tuition Fees (19+): £2882.00

Additional Costs

The materials fee of £30.00 is payable by all learners regardless of financial position. you will be assessed for tuition fees which may be applicable for anyone aged 19+ and the fees are £950. If you are aged 19+ you will need to pay £46 for the Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check, which is a requirement in order to complete the mandatory work placement element of this course.

Course and Career progression

There are various options open to those who complete successfully. Many opt to move straight to employment in the childcare sector; family centres, Registered children homes managers, youth worker, foster carers There is also the option to work overseas with travel companies or in private homes. With regard to higher education, you could move on to a foundation degree or study to qualify as a teacher.
