Course Overview

This course is for adults aged 19+. This is an adult evening course based at the Abbey Park Campus; you will be timetabled on a Tuesday evening from 5.45 pm to 8.45 pm every week. This is an intensive GCSE evening course which provides an understanding of the key concepts in chemistry at level 2.

This qualification could prepare you to study for an Access Diploma or provide the qualification in science you need for employment or further education. Many of the people who choose to study these courses require a science subject for progression to a PGCE and choose to take GCSE chemistry alongside their undergraduate studies.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

GCSE Chemistry provides an understanding of the key concepts of chemistry. There are two units covering the fundamentals of chemistry: atomic structure, periodic table, quantitative chemistry and its applications.
These two units are assessed by two written examinations in May and June. There is no coursework element. The AQA specification is followed.
You will be expected to study for at least six hours outside your timetabled classes.

Entry Requirements

You will preferably have a basic knowledge of scientific principles or have studied sciences at GCSE level previously to grade 3 (D). All applicants should be 19+ with a good level of written English. Pre-entry assessments will be given to gauge your suitability for the course during part-time enrolment.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed throughout the course to enable your tutor to set and review learning targets.
Summative assessment is by two separate, externally marked examinations in May and June.

As this is such a detailed and intensive course, you will be expected to study outside your timetabled classes for at least 6 hours per week; we will encourage you to use Moodle and ‘blend-space’ to support your studies.
