Course Overview

This apprenticeship is for you if you work or want to work as a site carpenter in the construction sector. It allows you to learn, develop, and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry and joinery. This apprenticeship is a blend of theoretical and practical sessions combined with workplace competencies. Achievement in this apprenticeship will help to secure your gold CSCS card within the advanced craft.

An advanced site carpenter will normally work on a building site, or on domestic and commercial premises, preparing and installing complex and often bespoke building components e.g. high quality doors, shaped linings, staircases with turns, complex wall and floor units, erecting bespoke structural carpentry (inclined roofs and joists) and erecting complex roof structures (e.g. inclined roofs with hips, valleys and dormers).

An apprenticeship is a job with training. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will be able to transfer some of the level 2 Carpentry and Joinery qualifications into this level 3. This will be looking more at the supervisory element of site carpentry. This will be planning work working with other trades and how this will affect the business. You will also be shown how to use different types of machinery.

Entry Requirements

You will already need to have an excellent level of competency and understanding within this vocational area or at least a level 2 qualification. Ideally, English and maths GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher, or an equivalent qualification are required. In order to be selected for this apprenticeship, you will need to have a passion for working in a hands-on environment within this exciting trade.

Finally, you must have the drive to complete the demands of the apprenticeship course and become a skilled worker. You will also need to demonstrate a commitment to learning while working and spend 20% of your working hours completing off-the-job training.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is by multiple choice question papers, covering knowledge outcomes and practical assignments covering performance outcomes. Assessments are set by City Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.

This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and you will also be regularly visited at work by your industry expert trainer assessor from Leicester College, who will support you to achieve the standard required. End-point assessment is the final stage of the apprenticeship. This will be carried out by an independent end-point assessor and the grades available are pass, merit, or distinction.
