Course Overview

This course provides an excellent route to higher education for adults who have the ability to benefit from higher education but have not had the opportunity to do so. It will prepare you for study at degree level, so if you would like to go to university but left school without the qualifications you need, then the Access to Higher Education Business course could be an excellent choice for you. In this course, you will study aspects of business, management, marketing, finance, accounting, law, English, and academic study skills.

If you are aged 19, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The course runs over one year, and you will be expected to attend classes three days per week. During this time you will study a variety of business-related topics, including business, management, marketing, finance, and law.

You will also develop your academic English and report writing skills, and other study skills that you will need for higher-level study, including research and referencing skills, presentation skills, and IT skills.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be aged 19 plus by no later than 31 August prior to starting the course. You will hold 5 GCSEs, including English and maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above. In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to study one of these qualifications alongside your Access course. One reference from your previous place of study or work will also be required. It would be preferable if one of the GCSEs is related to your chosen course of study.

In order for you to progress on to an undergraduate degree at a British university, it is essential to have achieved a minimum of a grade C (4/5) in English and Maths. It is your responsibility to check the GCSE grade profiles of the universities that you are interested in applying to and to attend a number of university open days.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed via projects, assignments, presentations and exams. This course is mainly assessed through coursework, and you will be required to submit around 30 assignments during the year.

You will also have a personal tutor assigned to help you throughout the course.
