The logistics industry is facing challenges as it seeks to recruit 1.2 million employees by 2020. This one-year subsidiary diploma is aimed at students who think they might be interested in logistics as a career. It is designed for students who are more likely to want to progress into employment or an apprenticeship rather than to university. Don’t worry if you change your mind because a subsidiary diploma is equivalent one A level and carries UCAS points. Progression onto further study such as a diploma course is also an option. The College has engaged with large and small logistics employers in the region and there will be opportunities on the course to develop employability skills working directly with industry specialists. You will study a range of business and logistics subjects giving you employment and progression choices.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
What You'll Learn
During the course, you will study six units (60 credits) that will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workplace or progress onto a diploma programme. Some of the units you will study are business environment; finance; introduction to marketing; business communications; quality management systems in logistics; transport planning; operations management of road transport; transport systems in the environment; and recruitment and selection. Successful completion leads to a qualification in its own right (Business/Logistics BTEC Subsidiary Diploma).
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in English and / or Maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

There are a variety of assessment methods such as: live projects, report writing, role play assessment, presentations, projects and discussions.

The course will involve induction activities and a number of course-related external visits for which a fee is incurred.

If you are aged 19 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However you may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for the course fee.
Course and Career progression
Upon completion of this qualification, you will be supported seek employment within the logistics industry or you may choose to continue your studies and progress on to further study with us. If you choose to study, for example, a BTEC Diploma in Business afterwards then this could lead to your gaining sufficient UCAS points to gain a place on a university level programme – for example, our Higher National Diploma in Business Management. From there, you could progress on to top up your degree programme at DeMontfort University. Alternatively you may decide to pursue an apprenticeship programme. We will be there every step of the way to support and guide you. The College is working closely with logistics industry partners so watch this space, as we may have further news on progression plans directly into the sector. Larger firms will be looking for employees to place directly onto the level 3 Supply Chain Practitioners New Apprenticeship Standard – and this course will stand you in good stead to secure one of those positions.
What Happens Next
Apply online via UCAS Progress or the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
