Bricklayer Intermediate Apprenticeship – P0230

This bricklaying apprenticeship will help you develop the skills required to work on a range of sites and projects, from large commercial developments to house extensions,.
You will learn to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, and arches, all of which are essential for a bricklayer’s skill set.

As a bricklayer, you may work one-on-one or on larger jobs, you may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying groups and other tradespeople.

An apprenticeship is a job with training. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.

Year 1

In the first year, you will learn the principles of construction and how they can be applied in the workplace.

You will be shown essential trowel skills and basic building techniques covering setting out, laying to level, and mixing mortar.

Alongside this, you will learn about general workplace health and safety and industry expectations and standards.

Year 2

In year 2, you will build on your skills from year one but also expand into more advanced tasks including constructing chimney stacks and manholes.

You must have achieved GCSEs in maths and English to apply for this apprenticeship. If you haven’t passed your GCSEs in these areas you will be required to complete Functional Skills as part of your apprenticeship.

Assessment is by multiple-choice question papers and practical assignments. These are set by City Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and externally verified by City Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.

This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and you will also be regularly visited at work by your industry expert trainer assessor from Leicester College, who will support you to achieve the standard required.

The endpoint assessment is the final stage of the apprenticeship. This is carried out by an independent endpoint assessor and the grades available are pass, merit, or distinction. Assessment methods for this standard are:
1) knowledge test
2) practical test
3) oral questioning

You may wish to progress onto the Advanced Construction, technical and professional programme within the built environment. Once qualified you will be able to attain your trade specific CSCS card, allowing you to work on-site. You will also be qualified to work as part of a wider team and/or start your own business.
