Beauty Therapy is a caring and rewarding industry but also requires hard work and dedication. This course is very intense, both practically and theoretically which requires total commitment and self-study at home in order to be successful. This course is an approximate split of 60% practical and 40% theory. There is a large amount of science-based knowledge that is needed to be learnt and understood in order to complete practical treatments and pass this qualification. Additionally, home study will also be needed (min 10 hours per week)
If you are aged 16 to 18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. This will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.
You will take part in activities that help you to develop your personal skills, such as building your character and confidence. This will help you to live well and move into your chosen career.
If you are 16-19 years old these activities will be timetabled as will work experience and placement. You can also choose to take part in other activities.
For other age groups, activities will be tailored to your needs.
What You'll Learn
Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Therapy consists of the following units:
– Anatomy and physiology, principles and practice for beauty therapists
– Hair removal (waxing)
– Facial and skin analysis
– Manicure and pedicure including gel polish
– Lash and brow treatments (tinting and shaping)
– Introduction to spa therapy.
All of the above subjects will include learning the theory and practical aspects. Anatomy and physiology is a large part of this qualification e.g. Muscular system, Skeletal system, Circulatory system, Lymphatic system, The skin, Hair and Nail as well as contra-indications for all of the treatments performed.
To enrol onto this course you will need to have achieved GCSEs at grade 3 or above in English and Maths or Functional Skills level 1 in both English and Maths. Additionally, we will also require you to have evidence of 90% attendance and a positive reference from your last place of work or study. Excellent communication skills are also desirable.
You will need to purchase the Level 2 Leicester College uniform and kit (costs below) in addition to this you must wear black flat unbranded closed in shoes (no trainers), hair to be tied up away from the face, no jewellery or piercings and nails are to be short and natural i.e. no gel, false nails or varnish.

Externally set theory exam
Synoptic practical exam
Additional unit assessment
All of the above will need to be passed in order to gain this qualification. Regular mock theory exams and practical assessments take place in order for students to demonstrate their learning and to gain feedback.

Additionally, you’ll need space to put your equipment and stationery for classroom-based assignments. Paper, pens, locker deposit (£5) and padlock are other essential items required for this course.

Course and Career progression
Successful completion of this qualification at Merit or Distinction will allow progression onto City and Guilds level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty and Spa Therapy (subject to the specific entry requirements).
There is also the opportunity to gain employment with your level 2 qualifications at salons, product retail companies, and department stores.
What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
