Course Overview

This course is an introductory programme that gives you knowledge and skills for the beauty therapy sector. You will develop a range of basic practical skills working on the hands and face. Within the course, you will gain an understanding of the importance of following safe working practices. You will also have the opportunity to develop your professional spoken English skills as you will work with a range of peers and potential clients during your course study. You will complete a series of written assignments with the support of your lecturing team giving you a knowledge of the theory associated with the course and this will also help to improve your written English skills.

If you are aged 16-18 you will be enrolled on a study programme which could include re-taking GCSEs or undertaking functional skills in English and maths. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. This programme will help to develop your written and oral communication skills, self-confidence and computer skills.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The units that you will study on your programme are:
– Facial skin care to include cleanse, tone and moisturise and skin diagnosis.
– Hand care and manicure to cover filing painting, cuticle work and hand and arm massage
– Day and evening make-up skills will be learnt and developed together with photographic make-up
– Face painting skills will help to develop your artistic and creative capabilities and you will learn how to create several characters.
– Nail art will include dotting and striping, foils and transfers
– Pedicure and foot care treatments will be covered.

You will spend time every week working on reception to develop your communication and customer service skills. Relevant salon health and safety requirements will be assessed.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F) or above is required.
Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
You will need to purchase the Leicester College uniform and kit (costs below) in addition to this you must wear black flat unbranded closed in shoes (no trainers), hair to be tied up away from the face, no jewellery or piercings and nails are to be short and natural i.e. no gel, false nails or varnish.

How you will be assessed

The emphasis is on ‘learning by doing’, and you will undertake a series of formative and summative practical assessments to assess your skill level. A range of written assignments will be completed throughout the programme and support will be given in your classes to allow you to do this. Level 1 assignments will be graded as a pass, merit or distinction.

Course and Career progression

You could progress on to a level 2 hairdressing course alternatively you could choose to undertake a level 2 beauty therapy or beauty retail course, or a hair and media make-up programme. You may be able to progress on to an apprenticeship, or if you prefer you could consider taking up employment as assistant in a hairdressing or beauty therapy salon.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
