This course is for adults aged 19+. This is a eight-week part-time beginners’ course in motor vehicle maintenance. The course is taught on Monday evening at our Abbey Park campus. The course is designed for those who wish to gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to be able to maintain a motor vehicle. It is designed to give you the confidence needed to be able to maintain your vehicle to a roadworthy standard. The course covers the basics of how a vehicle operates, including overviews of the main systems and practical experience in maintaining them. The course doesn’t lead to a formal qualification, which means there is a relaxed approach in class.
What You'll Learn
The program has been designed to improve your understanding of different vehicle systems and teach you how basic vehicle maintenance procedures are carried out. It includes topics such as basic engine, braking and tyre maintenance procedures, how a vehicle operates, how to maintain the vehicle in the winter and summer months. The aim of these workshops is to give you confidence in carrying out basic maintenance procedure, you will be given opportunities to practice skills and techniques learnt in our fully equipped motor vehicle workshops.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however an interest in motor vehicle maintenance would be beneficial.
How you will be assessed
The course is designed to give you the hands-on practical experience on carry out maintenance procedures and so is delivered and assessed practically. Your tutor will provide explanations, demonstrations and guide you through practical activities. All assessments are based on observations of practical activities. On completion of the course you will earn a College certificate. There is no formal assessment.
Tuition Fees (19+): £75.00
You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities in the workshops, which should consist of black steel toe cap safety boots, plain navy all in one overalls. There should be no deviation from the colour scheme and the kit would be expected to cost between £45 and £50.
If the course is longer than one year the total fees are for the first year only and further fees may apply in future years. All fees are based on a ‘home’ learner status. Please contact us for information on overseas fees.

What Happens Next
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
