The qualification aims to provide you with a range of technical practical skills and theory knowledge, which will equip you to progress on to the level 3 Barbering. You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to start this qualification. You are likely to choose this qualification if you want to cover all of the technical skills and knowledge needed to work as a junior Barber providing cutting, beards, moustaches and styling services. In today’s market, barbering services are of paramount importance.
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

You may also take functional skills or GCSE qualifications in English and maths. You will also need to undertake a minimum of 36 hours of work experience in a hairdressing salon, during the course.
Create basic outlines and detailing in the hair
In year two you will have the skills to progress to either level 3 barbering or level 2 full-time hairdressing, or an apprenticeship.
This will be subject to a tutor progress report and a skills test. As you progress through the year we can discuss options available to you.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required.
How you will be assessed
To gain this qualification you must successfully achieve the following assessments:
One externally set, practical exam, which you will carry out in the college salon. The typical exam brief will require candidates to provide a variety of hairdressing services to a number of clients within a commercially viable time. This will require students to use consultation techniques to identify client requirements and build a professional rapport.
One externally set, externally marked written exam, sat under examination conditions. The exam is designed to assess your depth and breadth of understanding across content in the qualification at the end of the period of learning, using a range of question types. Candidates who fail the exam at the first sitting will have one opportunity to re-sit.

What Happens Next
Apply online via UCAS Progress or the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a welcome event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
