Course Overview

This qualification aims to provide you with a range of practical skills and theory, which will equip you to progress on to the level 3 Barbering course. You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to start this qualification. You may need to supply clients for the course, to enable you to complete assessments.

On this course, you will learn all of the technical skills and knowledge needed to work as a junior Barber, including colouring, cutting, beards, moustaches and styling services. Barbering services provide a range of opportunities in an exciting sector, which is growing in popularity.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

This is a one year course where you will learn all the aspects of barbering, to enable you to progress in a career in this industry, including:

1. Health and Safety aspects of barbering
2. Consultation
3. Shampoo, conditioning, and treating the hair and scalp
4. Scalp massage
5. Cutting men’s hair
6. Styling men’s hair
7. Cutting beards and moustaches
8. Colouring men’s hair
9. Creating an Image based on a Theme

As an adult student, you may also take functional skills or GCSE qualifications in English and maths. We will also recommend 36 hours of work experience in a hairdressing salon, during the course.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and Maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required. A good reference is also required from school or an employer.
You will also have an interview and a skills test to ensure you meet the criteria for the course.

You will also need to be 19+ to be eligible for this part time course.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and Maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 (C) or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

How you will be assessed

To gain this qualification you must successfully achieve the following assessments: online theory exams and practical assessments for each unit, which you will carry out in the college salon. The typical exam brief will require candidates to provide a variety of hairdressing services to a number of clients within a commercially viable time. This will require students to use consultation techniques to identify client requirements and build a professional rapport.
Candidates who fail any theory or practical assessments will have the opportunity to resit them.

Course and Career progression

This level 2 certificate for barbering services aims to provide you with a range of essential technical practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek progression onto employment as a Junior Barber. Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be qualified to work in a number of employment destinations or progress in education such as level 3 barbering, barbershop stylist, and level 2 hairdressing

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications and
employment history, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
