Course Overview

This dynamic one-year course is professionally focused, industry-based training and preparation in acting and performance. Whether your interests are in classical theatre, contemporary theatre or physical theatre, this course provides opportunities to strengthen your skills for all genres of performance.
You will learn physical and vocal performance skills as well as working on a range of acting and performance techniques. Devising, rehearsing, making and performing work are at the centre of the programme with essential professional development skills which support the practical experience.
As a performing arts department, we have excellent links with a number of supporting organisations and theatres including Curve Theatre, Leicester. You will be taught by our faculty staff in acting and technical theatre as well as receiving a vibrant range of masterclasses and workshops by visiting practitioners.
The course will be delivered in part within the College’s professional city centre performance venue, the Sue Townsend Theatre, a fully equipped 250 seat theatre.

The course will provide Classes in acting, voice and movement, Preparation for further study and the performing arts workplace, a fully-equipped professional performance space at The Sue Townsend Theatre and college studios and academic support and resources of TEF Gold standard

What You'll Learn

Year 1

The course will be delivered through professional projects, skills-based classes, creative workshops, and rehearsals. You will gain an insight into the backstage world of theatre performance through Stagecraft to help maximise employability. You will gain a wide range of performing arts knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study and workplace scenarios. In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor and advice and support with audition techniques.
In addition to the core units of The Performing Arts Industry and Professional Development, you can expect to study units such as acting for camera, devising, voice and speech, movement and stagecraft.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry is 32 UCAS points (A-Level Grade C) BTEC Extended Diploma (PPP) consisting of at least one full Level 3 qualification in a related subject. You are also expected to hold GCSE English at grade 4/C or equivalent.
AS Levels are only counted towards your UCAS tariff in combination with a full level 3 qualification.
We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate the ability to study this subject at university level and can evidence relevant experience or natural acting ability.

Applicants will be asked to attend an audition.

How you will be assessed

The course is assessed with both practical and written assignments. Practical assessments take the form of studio/theatre-based performance. In addition to practical work, students are assessed via presentations and written coursework.

Course and Career progression

This course provides a solid grounding in performing arts and a number of possible career routes into the performing arts industry. Students may wish to continue study on a Level 5 programme or progress onto Conservatoire-style training at a drama school or alternatively consider university as an option for further study.
