Course Overview

AAT is a professional and well-recognised accounting technician qualification, providing a practical approach to accounting work.

The AAT level 3 diploma builds on basic financial knowledge by teaching complex accounting tasks such as preparing final accounts for partnerships and sole traders and maintaining cost accounting paperwork. It is suitable for those who have completed the AAT level 2 course or those who are at an intermediate level and looking to develop their existing accounting skills. Most of the lessons will be delivered face to face by your tutors. However, some elements of the course may be delivered via blended/online learning.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme. For this course, it is expected that you will already have obtained English and maths GCSE at grades 9 – 4 (A* – C). You will also be required to complete a compulsory work experience placement and engaged in an employability skill development programme.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During your one-year programme of study you will be required to undertake the following subjects: financial accounts; prepare a profit and loss balance sheet; prepare costs and revenue reports; prepare cash flow forecasts; prepare VAT returns; apply professional ethics in accounts and finance, and use spreadsheets in accounting and finance.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. You will also need to have successfully completed level 2 AAT in order to have gained the accounting knowledge necessary for level 3.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications although holding level 2 English and maths is desirable.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is by an online exam at the end of every unit and an overall synoptic exam at the end of the year.

Additional Costs

You will need to apply for your or renew your AAT membership (which costs approximately £100 – £120 for new registrations and approximately £75 for renewal) in order to study AAT and take AAT exams. These costs are subject to change by AAT.

Course and Career progression

Once you have successfully completed AAT level 3 you can take the AAT level 4 or a degree course in a university where the following accreditations can be gained: ACCA, ACA, CIMA (first year).
After completing AAT level 3, you will be competent to work as a financial accountant, an assistant financial accountant, a purchase ledger clerk, a sales ledger clerk or a general accounts clerk.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
