Course Overview

This course is for those aged 19+ whose first language is not English and is available at all ESOL venues.
You may be suitable for this course if you have not studied maths previously and for those who want to refresh their maths skills and progress to a higher level.
The course runs twice a year and you can join at any point.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will develop basic maths skills and concepts and learn about their application in everyday life, leading to Entry level Functional Skills qualifications. The course content includes basic numeracy skills, numbers, fractions, measurements, shapes, tables, and graphs. The course will also include the language, literacy skills, and vocabulary related to these maths topics.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. Your level of English and maths will be assessed at the time of enrolment.

How you will be assessed

You will take a Functional Skills assessment set by the Edexcel awarding organisation. Students enrolling a non-accredited module will complete an internal assessment.

Course and Career progression

This course is aimed at supporting students who want to improve their maths skills for life, work, and further study. Your tutor will advise you on progression. You will have the opportunity to study at a higher level or to take classes in a different subject. Careers Information, advice, and guidance is also available at Leicester College.

What Happens Next

Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to come into College if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.

For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short student details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
