Flying high for a future in game art
When Tom Georg left school, he had a clear ambition - to join the Royal Air Force. It had been his goal from a young age, and he was determined to pursue a career in the forces.
Whilst waiting for his start date, Tom sought guidance from the careers team at Leicester College and briefly enrolled on a patisserie course to stay engaged and continue learning. In March 2023, he began his journey with the RAF, successfully passing basic training before moving to RAF Cosford to start his apprenticeship.
However, Tom later realised the path that he had chosen was not the right fit for him, making the difficult decision to leave in December 2023. He began considering his next steps, but due to academic timelines, Tom had to wait until the following year to re-enter education.
Discovering a creative passion
In September 2024, Tom rejoined Leicester College and enrolled on the National Space Centre Immersive Media and Game Design BTEC Diploma (Level 3), delivered in partnership with the National Space Centre.
“The course offered a completely different style of learning, one that was creative, hands-on and digitally focused, which immediately resonated with me,” says Tom.
“The course teachers were brilliant and the way that they teach at the National Space Centre really worked well.”
Having developed an interest in gaming and digital creativity from an early age - playing video games since the age of six - Tom found his passion reignited.
Throughout the year, he immersed himself in areas such as digital art, immersive media and game design, discovering a particular interest in environment art - creating landscapes, buildings, trees and foliage, and detailed digital worlds used in video games.
Tom explains: “The course provides a strong platform for people looking for any media jobs in videography, graphic design, digital art, and film.”
Progression to university
Tom excelled on the course, achieving a Distinction. At 19, this qualification enabled him to progress to higher education with the equivalent of 1.5 A Levels.
In September 2025, Tom enrolled at De Montfort University to study Games Art (BA Hons). Now in his studies, he is thriving, achieving excellent grades and fully engaging with the course content.
Next steps
Tom aspires to work in a professional game studio, specialising in environment design - crafting digital worlds through landscapes, architecture and visual details.
“The ideal job would be working in somewhere like Japan, where the gaming industry is highly influential, but that requires at least 10 years’ experience,” Tom concludes.
