On the right track - building a career in the rail industry

When Saddam Munatsi moved to the UK, he decided to apply to Leicester College to acquire skills specifically in the railway industry. He saw the course as an opportunity to explore and gain insights into railway infrastructure.

Saddam said: “I grew up in a small town in Zimbabwe, where I was surrounded by the railway infrastructure that sparked my interest in the industry. After moving to Leicester, I saw the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of railways and immediately enrolled on the course.”

Saddam continues: “The course was very interesting. There was a lot of information given and it was a 100% course attendance. The course enables you to gain lots of skills, learning from a great team at Leicester College.  

“The tutors helped us throughout the course and my wonderful colleagues made it a great time to learn. I also learned some really good communication skills along the way on how to study effectively.  

“The course gives you the chance to do the practical side of things like engaging in customer service, learning how to communicate with members of the public and learning how to resolve conflicts in the working environment.”

Next steps and future aspirations

“I am currently working with Vital, one of the UK's leading subcontractors in track operations. My role involves operating machinery on the railway, providing a strong foundation for further career progression,” Saddam explained.

“During my time on the job, I've had the opportunity to work in various locations across the UK including Wales, Birmingham and Manchester. I've received strong support from the company since my entry-level position. I initially applied for a technician apprenticeship with Network Rail, which has allowed me to grow within the rail industry."
