Miranda overcomes challenge and builds confidence in healthcare

For Miranda Ncube, completing her T Level in Adult Nursing was a challenging but rewarding experience. After initially finding the science-heavy first year difficult, Miranda’s determination and the support from her tutors helped her progress and develop greater confidence in her abilities.

Now, with her sights set on a career in healthcare, Miranda is exploring her university options and considering which area of the sector she would like to specialise in.

Rising to the challenge

Miranda found the first year of her course particularly challenging, with a strong focus on science, theory and examinations.

“The first year was really hard for me because I found the science difficult. There was a lot of theory and exams, so you have to be prepared for the challenge.”

To help students build their understanding, additional lessons were available throughout the first and second years.

“I had extra lessons to help me understand things better. The teachers were really dedicated to helping us with the topics we found difficult.”

For Miranda, getting through the first year was an important milestone. Once she had achieved a strong foundation, she found the second year more relaxed and was able to enjoy the course even more.

Learning through practical experience

As Miranda progressed, she particularly enjoyed the practical and hands-on elements of the course.

“We did lots of practical sessions and scenarios, which I really enjoyed. The teachers were very helpful during these.”

Although some practical activities could become repetitive, Miranda appreciated the flexible approach of her tutors, who would adapt sessions and introduce different activities to keep the learning engaging.

“That flexibility was really helpful because it meant we could change things up and approach the practical work differently.”

Working alongside students from different classes also helped Miranda build her confidence and develop skills that she believes will benefit her beyond college. 

“Mixing with different classes helped me become more confident. A lot of what you learn on the course also helps you in real life.”

Exploring a future in healthcare

Miranda has always wanted to work in healthcare, but completing the course has given her the opportunity to explore the wide range of careers available within the sector before deciding on a particular specialism.

“I knew I wanted to go into healthcare, but I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to specialise in. The course gives you a broad understanding, so there are lots of different opportunities.”

She is now researching university courses at De Montfort University as she considers which area of healthcare she would like to pursue. 

For Miranda, the course is particularly suited to students who know they want to work in healthcare but are still exploring their options.

“If you know you want to go into healthcare but you’re not sure about the specific area you’d like to specialise in, I’d recommend the course. It gives you a good understanding of different areas and opens up a lot of opportunities.”
