Electrical Installation skills gained at Leicester College secure employment

Litran Sinfield was a Level 2 Electrical Installation student with a clear ambition - to build a career in the electrical industry. Although he briefly worked part-time as a labourer for 8-9 months, he knew that he wanted to follow the path of a career in electrical installation.

Enthusiasm opens doors to new opportunities

In June 2025, Litran took part in a site visit to a Lovell housing development on Saffron Lane, alongside 12 other students. The visit was organised to support learners in completing their course and gaining insight into industry practice.

During the visit, Litran spoke with the site manager about his interest in electrical work. His enthusiasm made a strong impression, and he was invited back to the site two weeks later.

Following this second visit, Litran was offered a job as a labourer by the site owner at Lovell. Determined to pursue electrical work, he continued to show initiative and expressed his interest in becoming an electrician. He was later introduced to the electrical contractor on site and successfully secured an electrician apprenticeship at G Coster.

Next steps

Litran now studies in Birmingham as part of his apprenticeship programme, whilst gaining hands-on experience on site. He values the opportunity to learn while earning and feels he is developing far more skills through his apprenticeship than he would in a classroom alone. Working alongside two other electrical apprentices, he says the real-world exposure has accelerated his knowledge and confidence.

He is particularly interested in renewable energy and hopes to work with solar panels in the future. Long-term, Litran plans to stay in the electrical trade, with ambitions to eventually move to Australia and start his own electrical company.

Advice to other students

Talking about the advice he would offer to others in his situation, Litran continues: “Pay attention in class, do everything you need to for the course, and ask questions when you’re on work experience. Apprenticeships teach you things you wouldn’t otherwise learn - you gain so much more knowledge being on site every day so it’s important you make the most of it by asking questions.”

Litran’s journey shows how making the most of industry visits and work experience can open doors to long-term career opportunities.
