Forging a career in event management
Leann Moore was studying Level 3 Business and Law at Leicester College and was at a crossroads about what to do next. She was struggling before her lecturer stepped in and suggested a BA Top-Up course.
Having always travelled with her Dad, both for business and leisure, Leann saw his work managing conferences and developed an interest in both travel and event management.
Leann has studied at Leicester College for the past five years and is now progressing successfully through her BA Top-Up in Tourism & Event Management.
Planning for the future
Leann is currently on track to graduate with (hopefully) a first-class or 2:1 degree classification and has ambitious plans to continue her studies with a master’s degree at Oxford Brookes University in International Tourism & Event Management. She is also hoping to secure a six-month international work experience placement at Oxford Brookes, further strengthening her global industry exposure.
Further down the line, Leann would ideally like to work with an international organisation, such as Salesforce, through an apprenticeship or another role that allows her to focus on event management.
Leann’s journey has not been without significant personal challenges, including the loss of her Mum, but she has continued to progress with the support of her tutors and the wider college team. “The encouragement I received throughout my journey, especially during difficult periods, really helped me stay focused and motivated,” Leann says.
Reflecting on a successful course experience
Reflecting on her course experience, Leann highlighted how much she has enjoyed her studies, particularly event planning and her dissertation exploring how political discourse in the media affects tourism in the UK and USA. “I’ve loved the BA course so much and really enjoyed event planning elements of the course. The course itself works for different characters – it brings you out of your shell and makes you step out of your comfort zone. It’s a good course for people looking at working in tourism, event management and the hotel sector more broadly.”
Leann credits her lecturers with playing a key role in her success, praising their support and guidance throughout her journey. From helping her navigate challenges to encouraging her to “keep going,” she feels she has been part of a supportive and understanding learning environment that has enabled her to thrive. “The teachers have been so helpful and I couldn't have asked for a better team,” Leann adds.
Now approaching graduation, Leann is looking ahead to an exciting future in international tourism and events, with clear ambitions to build on her achievements and progress within the industry.
