Kyle’s ambition to help others

For Kyle Cameron, a desire to help people has always been at the heart of his career ambitions. After achieving a Merit in his Adult Nursing T Level course at Leicester College - exceeding his expectation of a Pass - Kyle is now preparing to take the next step towards a career in critical care.

Finding the right path in healthcare

Kyle knew he wanted a career where he could make a difference to others, with adult nursing standing out because of the opportunity to work directly with patients.

“I’ve always wanted to help people, and adult nursing felt like the area I fitted into the most because you get to work directly with patients.”

One of the things Kyle valued about the course was being introduced to areas of healthcare he had not previously encountered.

“It was really interesting because you learn things that you wouldn’t necessarily know before coming to college. The course doesn’t just focus on nursing either - it gives you an understanding of different aspects of healthcare.”

Learning from industry professionals

Kyle particularly valued being taught by tutors with professional experience of working within healthcare.

“The tutors have worked in the profession themselves, so you get that inside knowledge. They can tell you about careers and what the workplace is actually like, rather than just teaching you the science behind it.”

The course began with a greater focus on theory, giving Kyle the knowledge he needed before moving into more practical learning.

“The first year was quite theory-based and there was a lot of information to take in. In the second year, it became more practical, which I found easier because we were able to put what we had learnt into practice.”

Growing in confidence
Starting the course was initially daunting for Kyle, particularly as he was the only male student in his class.

“At first, I was nervous because I was the only male in the class, but I quickly got over that. The experience has made me a lot more confident.”

As he progressed through the course, Kyle continued to work hard and achieved a Merit - a result that exceeded his own expectations.

“I was expecting a Pass, so achieving a Merit was a great feeling. It has inspired me to keep working hard and see what I can achieve next.”

Taking the next step into paramedic science

Kyle is now preparing to progress to Coventry University, where he plans to study Paramedic Science.

His long-term ambition is to work within the ambulance service before specialising as a critical care paramedic, allowing him to support patients who need it most.

“I want to specialise in an area where I feel like I can help people the most. Working as a critical care paramedic is what I’d eventually like to be.”
