From tinkering with machinery to an engineering apprenticeship
For 18-year-old Jozsef Phoenix Snart, an interest in understanding how things work has developed into the beginnings of a career in engineering.
After successfully achieving a Merit in his Level 3 T Level in Mechanical Engineering at Leicester College, Jozsef is now preparing to take the next step in his engineering career with an apprenticeship.
Turning a hobby into a career
Jozsef’s interest in engineering began long before he started thinking about his future career.
“I’ve always loved tinkering with things and working with machinery. It started as a personal hobby because I’ve always enjoyed making things and understanding how they work.”
When exploring his options after school, the T Level at Leicester College caught his attention. After researching the course online, he attended an open day to find out more.
“The course sounded really interesting and when I came in, all of the teachers seemed really friendly. It felt like somewhere I would enjoy studying.”
Putting theory into practice
Over the two-year course, Jozsef developed both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in engineering.
“The first year was more focused on theory and then we got to do more practical work with machinery, including working towards our final project.”
A major part of the T Level was completing a 315-hour industry placement, giving Jozsef the opportunity to experience engineering in a professional environment.
With support from Leicester College, he secured his placement with the Leicester Society of Model Engineers.
“It was great. Everyone was really friendly and it gave me the chance to experience what the real working world is like.”
Representing his course
One of Jozsef’s proudest moments was being elected as a course representative, giving him the opportunity to be a voice for other students.
“Being elected as course rep was definitely a highlight. It meant I could represent my course and speak on behalf of the other students.”
Jozsef also valued the support he received from his tutors throughout his studies.
“The teachers were always there when I needed them. If I had a question about a task or needed help with something, they would always answer and support me.”
He would recommend the course to other students interested in engineering, particularly because of the people and support they can find along the way.
“You meet a bunch of new people and the teachers are really kind. Even if you have issues or find something difficult, there is always someone there to help.”
Engineering his next step
Jozsef’s time at Leicester College has now helped him secure his next opportunity. From September, he will begin an apprenticeship in fastening engines with Howmet Aerospace.
For students considering following a similar path, Jozsef’s advice is to remain determined when things become challenging.
“Keep going and be resilient. There can be pressure, but you can overcome it.”
As he prepares to begin his apprenticeship, Jozsef is looking forward to seeing where his passion for engineering takes him next.
“I’m taking it as it comes and looking forward to what’s next.”
