"The teaching team is brilliant. You can ask for advice or help at any time and they're always there to support you. I've always felt comfortable reaching out whenever I've needed guidance."

How a love of football led Jessica to a once-in-a-lifetime World Cup opportunity

For 18-year-old Jessica Cooke, sport had always been a huge part of her life. Now studying Sports Coaching and Development Level 3 at Leicester College, Jessica is turning her passion for football and coaching into exciting opportunities for the future.

Where the inspiration came from

Jessica's love of sport started at a young age, inspired by her brother.

"I've always been into sport, especially football. My brother inspired me to start playing when I was around 12 years old, and what began as a bit of fun soon became something I wanted to pursue more seriously."

After completing the Level 2 Sports Coaching course, Jessica decided to continue her studies at Leicester College and progress onto her Level 3.

Why Leicester College?

"I looked at lots of different colleges, but Leicester College had the best opportunities and it was convenient for me. I always knew that I wanted to study sport, and after doing my research and attending open days, I knew this was the right course."

Jessica has particularly enjoyed the balance between theory and practical learning.

"The course is a mix of theory and practical sessions. You learn about coaching techniques and planning, but you also get plenty of opportunities to put those skills into practice."

Standout moments

One of the standout moments of Jessica's college experience has been the support she has received from her tutors.

"The teaching team is brilliant. You can ask for advice or help at any time and they're always there to support you. I've always felt comfortable reaching out whenever I've needed guidance."

Alongside her studies, Jessica has represented Leicester College's football team, competing in matches every Wednesday, and taking part in local leagues and tournaments. However, one opportunity stands out above all others.

"One of the coaches talked to us about a tournament where players could be spotted for an opportunity to travel to New York for the World Cup competition. I never thought I'd get selected, so when I did, it felt unreal."

The three-day trip proved to be one of the highlights of Jessica's time at college.

"It was such an amazing experience. I travelled with people I barely knew, but by the end of the trip, it felt like we'd known each other for years. Seeing New Jersey, the stadium and watching England play Panama was incredible. It's one of the best things I've ever done."

Jessica’s advice to other students

Looking back on her time at Leicester College, Jessica would encourage anyone considering further education to take the leap.

"I would tell anyone thinking about studying at Leicester College not to hold back and just go for it. I was in that position once and it's been such a great experience. You'll meet loads of new people and make memories that you'll never forget."

When asked whether she would recommend the course, Jessica didn’t hesitate.

"Definitely. It's a great course to be part of and the support from the teaching staff makes such a difference."

Next steps

As for the future, Jessica is keeping her options open, with plans to either move into full-time coaching or continue her studies at university.

"I know I want to stay involved in sport. Whether that's coaching full-time or going to university, I'm still exploring my options, but sport will definitely be a big part of my future."
