Returning to education to prepare for return to work
Having moved to Leicester from London in 2018 and suffering with health issues in 2020, Hadi Salka had to put his working life on hold.
He had worked in security and CCTV operator jobs but he knew that he would have to manage his return to work, when the time came, and would have to be ready. After seeing adult education courses advertised at the local Job Centre, Hadi applied to start with English Level 1 and Level 2 to achieve a GCSE Grade 5.
He also started a Level 2 in Computer Skills, until he had another health issue with his hands, and joined a Level 1 in Maths with plans to move on to a Level 2.
Setting an example to motivate his sons
Hadi is also inspired by his two young sons. He believes that “a father should know everything!” and wants to help his sons with their work by providing them with motivation to learn.
A chance to continue education
Hadi says: “The atmosphere at Leicester College is very friendly and they respect adult learners. It’s a good opportunity for me to build my skills before I look to return to part-time work.
“Returning to further education has been completely different and a good adventure for me. I’ve been working alongside a diverse range of people, with different mentalities and backgrounds.
“I previously went to a different college and as most of the other students were younger than 20 years old, I was one of the oldest students and I felt embarrassed. At Leicester College, you will meet people in their 80s trying to get some knowledge by doing different courses.
“Leicester College has a lot of courses to suit all requirements – giving people from different backgrounds, cultures and ages a chance to continue their education.”
