Finding a new direction through Launch Pad

When Darrell Gumpo first applied to Leicester College, he had his sights set on studying Accounting. However, without the GCSE qualifications needed to enrol on the course, he found himself unsure of what to do next.

Rather than giving up on his education, Darrell joined Leicester College's Launch Pad programme - a Foundation Learning course designed to help young people build their confidence, develop essential skills and progress onto further study.

A fresh start

Launch Pad gave Darrell the opportunity to strengthen his English and maths, whilst exploring a range of different subject areas and developing valuable employability skills.

Reflecting on his experience, Darrell says: "When I first applied to Leicester College, I wanted to study Accounting but didn't have the GCSEs needed for the course.

"The Launch Pad programme gave me another opportunity and helped me to build my confidence and develop new skills. Through subjects such as creative industries, employability, maths and English, I improved my teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills."

Alongside his studies, Darrell also took part in visits to universities, including De Montfort University, helping him to explore future career opportunities and think more confidently about his next steps.

Discovering a new passion

During the programme, Darrell discovered an interest in IT, leading him in a new direction.

After successfully completing Launch Pad, he progressed onto a Level 2 IT course at Leicester College and has since secured a place on the Level 3 programme, continuing to build the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the digital sector.

Looking ahead

Looking back, Darrell believes Launch Pad gave him far more than an alternative route into education. It helped him grow in confidence, develop important life skills and discover a career path that suited his interests.

Darrell comments: "The programme also gave me the chance to explore different career options and visit places like DMU, which helped me think more about my future. Launch Pad has helped shape me into a better person and provided a clear pathway for my next steps.

"After progressing onto further study, I'm now moving forward with my career goals and would encourage other young people to take advantage of the opportunities it offers."
