“I would recommend the course to anyone who’s creative. It’s very hands on, studying lots of styles. The teachers are open to doing things differently so they find what works for you."

Expressing creativity through hairdressing

There are many different ways to express your creativity but for Ciara O’Connor, she found that for her, a good way to be creative was through hairdressing.

“I’ve always been into hair, sorting my own and for my friends. Consequently, when it came to thinking about a possible career choice, I looked at hairdressing and signed up for the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing at Leicester College,” says Ciara.

“Hairdressing can take you into all sorts of different sectors, from working in salons, through to hospitals and films, which is where I want to be.

“During the course, we’ve looked at different cuts and colours, perms and settings. I’ve particularly enjoyed perming, cutting techniques, and mixing and creating with colours.”

“It’s been good to find people with similar interests, who are also very friendly. The lecturers are nice and helpful.

“I would recommend the course to anyone who’s creative. It’s very hands on, studying lots of styles. The teachers are open to doing things differently so they find what works for you.

“After this course finishes, I’ll be applying for a Masters degree in media make up artistry at De Montfort University, which is partnered with Leicester College so I’ll get to retain those links.

“In the future, I plan to work as a freelancer in TV and films, providing professional hair and make up for horror and fantasy shows. Hairdressing and make up can make or break a film so I’m looking forward to showing how creative I can be in this environment.”
