From passion to profession

Braiden Whittaker is studying a T Level in Mechanical Engineering at Leicester College, having heard about the course whilst at Leicester College on a Level 2 in the previous year.

Braiden says: “My passion for engineering flourished whilst I was completing my Level 2. I chose a T Level because it is equivalent to three separate A levels and is completed in a shorter period.

“Since taking the course, I have developed skills which will help me go further in this field including expertise in handheld power tools and machinery such as the lathe and the milling machine.

“Although this course is more challenging, it does mean a higher reward.”

Finding the right balance of work placement and coursework

Braiden continues: “During the course, I did my work experience at the Abbey Park Miniature Railway which was easy for me to find. I had a great time as I enjoy railways and seeing what goes on behind the scenes. During the placement, I was given a range of tasks including fixing locomotives and tracks.

“I really liked the balance of the coursework and work experience that the College set. The work experience was typically on the weekends, so I was able to focus on theoretical coursework during the week and then on the weekends, I worked on the practical side of the course.”

Opening up opportunities

“I highly recommend the course for people who need to have a strong challenge, prefer practical work over theoretical, want to succeed and get a good grade. It opens things up so you can progress opportunities in mechanical engineering,” concludes Braiden.
