How the Accounting T Level has helped Arjun’s ambition to become a chartered accountant

After achieving a Distinction in his T Level in Accounting at Leicester College, Arjun Shemar is preparing to take the next step towards his ambition of becoming a chartered accountant.

With a combination of classroom learning and valuable industry experience, the course has helped Arjun develop his understanding of accounting while giving him the opportunity to experience the profession first-hand.

Developing practical accounting skills

Arjun particularly enjoyed the second year of his T Level, when he was able to put more of his knowledge into practice.

“I really enjoyed the second year because it was more practical. The course gives you a broad understanding of accounting, so you can experience different areas before deciding what you might want to specialise in.”

Throughout his studies, Arjun also valued the support he received from his tutors, particularly when preparing for assessments.

“The teachers were really helpful, especially with revision. There can be a lot of work, but they supported us and helped us prepare.”

Experiencing the working world

A key part of Arjun’s T Level was completing an industry placement at Taxsolvers in Leicester, where he gained practical experience of working within an accounting environment.

During his placement, Arjun carried out a range of tasks, including bookkeeping functions, allowing him to apply what he had learnt at College in a professional setting.

“I found the work quite straightforward, although there was a lot to do. It was good to experience what working in accounting is actually like and put what I had learnt into practice.”

For Arjun, the amount of time T Level students spend in the workplace is one of the qualification’s biggest benefits.

“I would recommend the course, especially because of the work placement. T Levels give you more hours in the workplace, so you get that experience alongside what you’re learning at college.”

The broad nature of the course also gives students the opportunity to explore different areas of accounting before choosing a specialism.

Taking the next step

After achieving a Distinction, Arjun is now preparing to progress to university, where he will study Accounting and Finance.

Looking further ahead, he hopes to specialise in management accounting and work towards a CIMA qualification, with the ultimate ambition of becoming a chartered accountant.
