ESOL course lays the foundation for university
What were you doing before the course?
I had recently arrived in the UK. I had a strong academic and professional background from Afghanistan, but I faced challenges with the English language and adapting to a new country. I knew that improving my English was the first step to rebuilding my future here.
What motivated you to take the course?
My dream has been to study Computer Science and become a network engineer or cybersecurity expert in the UK. But before I could do that, I needed to build my English skills. So, I joined ESOL to lay that foundation and prepare myself for university.
What were the particular highlights of the course for you?
There were many! I really appreciated how supportive and friendly the teachers were. Every class felt like a safe space where we could make mistakes and grow. I especially enjoyed the writing and speaking activities, which gave me the confidence to communicate clearly in everyday situations.
How do you feel that the course has benefited you?
The ESOL course changed everything for me. It didn’t just improve my English, it opened the door to higher education, helped me integrate into UK life, and gave me the confidence to express myself clearly. Thanks to the course, I was able to apply and receive a full Sanctuary Scholarship at the University of Leicester.
What practical skills and personal attributes have you developed during the course?
I developed strong reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English. I also became more confident. My communication skills have grown, and I’ve become more comfortable in group discussions, presentations, and academic writing. All things that will help me at university and beyond.

The course built a solid foundation for my future studies. It helped me to improve my English. I now feel ready to start my degree in Computer Science this September and work toward a career in tech.
What opportunities have arisen as a result of the course?
I was able to apply for and receive a place at the University of Leicester. I was also shortlisted and awarded the Sanctuary Scholarship, which will cover my tuition and support me financially.
If you’ve already completed the course, what are you doing now?
After completing ESOL Level 2, I just started my foundation year in Computer Science at the University of Leicester. In the meantime, I’m self-studying IT certifications like CCNA and keeping fit through regular gym training.
What are your career ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future, employment-wise? How has the course at Leicester College helped towards these ambitions?
My ambition is to become a skilled network engineer and later a cybersecurity expert. I want to work for top companies in the UK and eventually pursue a master’s degree at Oxford or Cambridge. Leicester College gave me the language skills and confidence I needed to start that journey. It was the first big step toward my dream.
How do you feel about learning and its importance in finding a job/higher education opportunities?
I believe learning is the key to changing your life. For me, education is not just about getting a degree, it’s about building a better future. Especially as a refugee, learning gave me purpose, structure, and hope. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the chance to go to university or even dream of the career I want.
How did the course suit your lifestyle?
The course was flexible and supportive. The teachers were understanding of each student’s background and challenges. For someone like me, new to the UK and trying to rebuild my life, it fit perfectly. I never felt pressured, and I always felt supported.
Would you recommend Leicester College to others? If so, for what reasons?
Absolutely! The teachers are incredibly supportive, the learning environment is respectful and diverse, and the courses are designed to genuinely help people move forward. If anyone wants to improve their English, gain confidence, or prepare for further education or work, this is the place to start.
