Leicester College has named Open Hands as the official College charity for the 2015/2016 academic year.

Open Hands serves a community with over 100 nationalities passing through its doors and engaging in its activities. The Centre is there hub from which homeless and disadvantaged people of the city of Leicester can come and receive practical support and provision. The Centre offers free clothes, food, household items and furniture and runs a number of training courses that give people life skills with the aim to improve their lives. www.openhandsleicester.org.uk

The Learner Engagement and Enrichment Team was pleased to welcome Beth Corbett from Open Hands who shared her gratitude at the college choosing the Charity as this year’s beneficiaries and said “We are very excited about the next year and working with the College.”

Also at the launch event were representatives Patrick Harris and Kath Lawson-West from the outgoing charity “The Bridge”. After a successful year of fund raising for the College charity with challenges, samosa sales, cake sales, raffles, football competitions, sports days etc, learners from computing were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for £5,141.22, the result of all the colleges charity work. They shared their experiences of climbing Snowdon, setting up stalls and sold samosas which all contributed to the outstanding amount that the College has raised.

Deputy Principal, Shabir Ismail said “Supporting local charities was not only important for the money raised but that it gives learners valuable experiences that they could take into the world of work.”
