A spectacular floristry display was arranged by both learners and staff from Leicester College as part of the flower festival at Leicester Cathedral which opened earlier this month.

The Cathedral was filled with flora for its first Festival of Flowers in 13 years.

The exhibition was held from Friday, September 13 to Monday September 16, 2013.

Thousands of fresh flowers and foliage filled the aisles of St Martins, with a display from our very own learners and staff from our Level 2 Diploma in Floristry, whose exhibit was  titled ‘Marriage’.

Many of the learners taking part had just recently enrolled at Leicester College when they were asked to take part in the exhibition.

Among them was Alexandra Croft. Alexandra said: “It feels like being thrown into the deep end, but it’s a great way to learn. Leicester Cathedral is a gorgeous setting and it’s got such a spiritual feel to it. The added advantage is that we get to see other different styles that exhibiting designers have brought with them which is also inspiring.”

Learner Lisa Price, also on the same course, said: “I wanted to work in a creative field so this course is perfect for me.

“I’ve really enjoyed working on the Cathedral exhibition and this is a great chance to get experience and learn quickly.”

The event, which was open to the public, was given a Richard III theme and was inspired by the king’s motto, Loyalty Binds Me, and the Queen’s Jubilee visit last year.

“They have really worked hard on the exhibition and this is a wonderful way for them to learn new skills and put what they have learnt so far into practice and be inspired for the future.”Jane De La Rue, lecturer in Floristry at Leicester College, said: “It’s been a great inter-college effort. We’ve all been working together to make this a huge success and have had a great response from our learners taking part.
