The Work Club at Leicester College

Content

The National Careers Service Careers Advisors at Leicester College run a weekly Work Club and Apprenticeships Support Club at The City Skills Centre. They are based at 74-76 Charles Street LE1 1FB and take place every Wednesday on the first floor in room 1.08 from 1-4pm.

The Work Club provides ongoing support to learners and the public. We support with the following:

  • Creating or updating CVs
  • Writing covering letters
  • Registering and applying for volunteering placements
  • Application form support
  • Creating new email accounts
  • Setting up Universal job match
  • Registering with online websites such as CV-Library and Reed Jobs
  • Setting up LinkedIn Accounts
  • Compiling speculative letters to apply for work placements, volunteering or paid work with companies that are not currently advertising jobs

Attending the Work Club can provide you with extra confidence for completing applications for work. The personal statement section of an application form can be quite intimidating for those who have not made recent applications for work. Completion of this section is required to ensure the applicants can demonstrate that their skills and abilities are matched to the person and job specifications in order to progress to interview stage. The team can show you how to utilise the job description and the person specification for the advertised vacancy to provide evidence in the form of examples and show how you meet the job requirements.

Useful booklets for CV creation, Interview skills and Researching and Applying for Work are available for customers to use within the sessions and to take with you for future use.

You can attend the Work Club just once or every week to complete job searching activity based on your current support needs. The service is offered on a drop-in basis.

When you attend the Work Club the Careers Advisors will set you up on a computer and support you with your job search activity. We may identify skills gaps and advise you to complete courses to develop your skills such as English, Maths and basic ICT courses.

Chamanthi Amarasinghe is a current learner at Leicester College and she is studying GCSE Maths and Functional skills English at level 2. Chamanthi has been a customer of the National Careers Service since 2015. She originally came to see an Advisor to gain advice on becoming a Teaching Assistant. Chamanthi has now completed her level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification. She has recently been attending the Work Club in order to compile a new CV to look for work in a Teaching Assistant post. Chamanthi says, “The work club is very useful as I can gain support to look for work. I have created my CV and covering letter to apply for work. Dana has also helped me to apply for Teaching Assistant roles within primary schools in Leicester. I have struggled in the past with completing the forms but I am now confident and can use my old applications to support me with new vacancy applications.”

If you are considering looking for work either paid, unpaid, part time or full time, the National Careers Service team can help you! Come along to the Work Club to speak with an Advisor to gain more information.
