Leicester College and ALRA (The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts) have collaborated and launched an exciting two-year fast track degree course: BA in Acting (Creative Performance Practice).

Naomi Halliday, a student at Leicester College has been on this course since September 2018 and has spoken about her experience.

Meet Naomi…

Why did you choose this course?

“I found out about the course after I auditioned at ALRA for their acting course, they told me they thought I’d be better suited for this one at Leicester College, which they have also created, so I auditioned and here I am.”

What is it about acting that made you want to pursue it further?

“I’ve always wanted act and I’ve been to see a lot of shows. When I was 9 I moved to York and auditioned for the York Theatre Royal pantomime, and I got in. From then on I have been constantly acting and doing shows, now I’m 21.

My uncle is an actor and has advised me to go through drama school before going into the industry.”

You said you’ve been acting since you were 9, what have you done so far?

“I’ve done about 21 shows, most of them have been professional with York Theatre Royal, but I’ve also done some amateur musicals. I was in the film of the railway children which originated in York and went to London and Canada.”

How do you feel this course has benefitted you so far?

“It’s hard to pin it down. I’ve learnt so much about how to hold myself and express something through movement and focus on breathing. Also how focusing on the breath can go take you into emotions and characters.

We’ve done a lot of acting for the camera, so how something as little as your eyebrow-raising can indicate volumes to the audience and you wouldn’t necessarily think that if you were doing theatre.”

What are your long-term plans?

I want to experience all aspects of acting so I definitely want to do more theatre, more film and I’d love to experience doing voice work. I’m kind of open to any opportunity. That’s what I liked about this course because it is quite open.

I want to maybe write my own stuff, through this course, I’ve discovered that I actually do quite like writing scenes and seeing them come alive.”

Would you recommend this course to others?

“Absolutely, it’s fantastic. I have learnt so much about movement, contemporary dance, ballet, acting for the camera, rehearsal methods and singing. We cram in so much and it’s all so beneficial. I’m so excited to see how far we’ll get in two years.”

Naomi was really excited and pleased with her acting course, she complimented the teaching staff and the interaction she’s had with ALRA.
