19-year-old Alfie is on his second year of a carpentry and joinery specialism T Level, a new qualification offered by Leicester College. After his teacher recommended this course as a ‘good fit’ for Alfie, he has been getting stuck in to both the theory and the practical experience that T levels offer.
“The experience is invaluable and this course offered way more hands-on opportunities than other qualifications. The fact that it is equivalent to three A levels will be very useful in my future career goals to progress to higher education and university, where I hope to gain a management qualification, and to ultimately work in a freelance HSE role.”
Previously gaining a level 1 diploma in construction skills, Alfie feels that the T Level has strengthened his knowledge within the carpentry trade, such as how to work safely with and around other workers, and how carpentry plays a role in the wider construction sector.
So far, Alife has had work experience with two companies, which saw him traveling up and down the country completing jobs such as block work.
“My stepdad was on hand to help with finding contacts for work experience and I found the split of coursework to practical work ratio perfect to ensure that I gained the knowledge I needed, alongside being able to earn an income and strengthen my practical skills.”
He also had the opportunity to visit the building of student accommodation in the centre of Leicester. “I found this fascinating as it got me out of the workshop and saw the project as a bare bones structure – it really helped me to realise my potential and that I will hopefully be involved with projects like this in the future.
“I would highly recommend a T Level course to other learners – the first year is quite theory heavy, but it needs to be as it will enable you to gain the qualifications you need go to university – you have to work for it. It has given me so much confidence in myself and my ability, as well as improved my attention to detail. If you have your heart set on a career, then a T Level can help you get there – go for it!”
