Success Stories: Molly Thatcher, Foundation Degree Learner
10 October 2017
Student of the Year Nomination
Molly is studying for her foundation degree in hospitality and events management with Leicester College. Hers is another of our learner success stories. She was nominated by her tutor Jennie Porter to win Student of the Year in Leicestershire Promotions’ 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards.
Molly started a degree elsewhere before deciding on the Leicester College course. She decided to come here instead as our course better suited her lifestyle and commitments. Molly affirms: “I was able to move back home, [and] we are in three days a week which allowed me to also work some other days. I was still able to get some extra money but I was also able to do self study.”
Confidence Building
Additionally, Molly credits her foundation degree course with building her confidence. The course has also helped her to find her path. She adds: “we have undertaken projects with Leicester City Council and Leicester Cathedral, which are hugely beneficial projects.” When she finishes her foundation degree, she plans to top up to a full BA. Her eventual ambition is to move into events work.
Molly came to Leicester College well qualified, already having her GCSEs and A levels. However, the fact that she received an unconditional offer was a confidence booster. She also reports enjoying the course thanks to its mix of practical and academic tasks, meaning “it doesn’t get boring”.
Hoping to travel lots in her future career, Molly also praises the support on offer at Leicester College. She especially likes the facilities and helpful teaching staff – she says “you are guided in whatever direction you wish to go in”.
A Fantastic Team Player
Molly’s tutors praise her commitment, conscientiousness, and ability to work as part of a team. The fact that she was nominated in the Student of the Year category in Leicestershire Promotions’ awards is testament to the fact that she has worked so hard. As well as achieving high grades in all subject areas, Molly has overcome outside struggles too. Tutor Jennie Porter says: “Despite suffering with anxiety, Molly feels passionate about studying and working in this industry. She is determined to overcome her personal obstacles.” Jennie adds: “Molly is a fantastic team player with a high level of leadership skills.”
