Student Success Story: Diane Cavanagh

A Return to Learning

Diane returned to learning in her 20s, after working for five years in the travel and tourism industry locally.

For Diane, her motivation for returning to College was to build on her existing qualifications. These included A levels and a level 3 travel and tourism qualification. Her eventual aim was to improve her career prospects and later train to teach her subject.

So in 2015, Diane came back to Leicester College to study for her foundation degree in travel and tourism. Of her chosen course, she says: “[it] has given me a deeper insight into the industry that I love as well as allowing me to develop new skills and old ones.

“I have an understanding of how a business operates overseas as well as understanding the background of travel and tourism businesses.”

Two Qualifications & A Place at University

Additionally, Diane has completed a level 5 teacher education qualification with us.

As a result of Diane’s hard work, she has been offered a place at University College Birmingham to complete her degree in international tourism and business management. She has also worked at Swissport (based in East Midlands Airport); been offered a job in Seville; won an Adult Learner Award, and been nominated for Student of the Year in Leicestershire Promotions’ 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards during the past two years!

Jennie Porter, Diane’s tutor, praises Diane’s commitment and dedication to her studies. Jennie singles out Diane’s “professionalism and integrity” as she worked alongside her own tutors on her teacher training course. Diane completed both her foundation degree and teacher training qualification at the same time, as well as taking on paid employment in her spare hours.

Learning for Success

Once Diane has completed her degree, she plans to share her sworn “knowledge and passion” for travel and tourism. She plans to become a college tutor herself. She also hopes to travel and even teach abroad.

Diane is undoubtedly a hardworking, high-achieving student. We wish her every success in the future.
