Creative 62 – Apprentice Lauren is hired!

Last week Creative 62 shared a blog post about Lauren who found that an apprenticeship was better for her than to attend College. We at Leicester College recognise every individual has different needs and capabilities and we hope to place you in a position that is best suited to you.

As Brexit looms and the UK urgently seeks more professionals to fill an increasing skills gap, we are harnessing the power of apprenticeships at our head office in Enderby.

We’ve been quite public about our frustration with the recruitment process in recent years and the inadequate work-readiness of graduates applying from University, many of whom seem to lack the basic professional skills and creativity that we are looking for. The government’s latest pledge to create 3 million new apprenticeships by 2020 certainly suggests that we are not alone in the challenges employers face in finding the right people for the job.

With a commitment to nurture Leicester’s brightest design talent and add value for our business and extensive client base, we felt that the time was right to explore apprenticeships as a viable opportunity.  Through our relationship with Leicester College, we were able to identify skills required and explore opportunities for the right candidates which resulted in the placement of Apprentice Lauren Roche in October this year.

Lauren, 17, from Lutterworth is studying Level 2 Graphic Design and is now based with us full time working on a variety of projects.  Day-to-day she will be involved in studio discussion and encouraged to contribute her ideas towards logo development and artwork.

We’re delighted to welcome Lauren to the team; we can explain how things work or why things are as they are, processes and the importance of things like colour or the right font selection. She will understand the commercial realities of what we do, when to be creative, when flare is necessary and that for our clients a return on investment is essential.

Lauren, who describes her apprenticeship as “100% better than being at college” feels that her placement with an established creative agency will give her a competitive advantage in the future.  She said “This is such a valuable learning experience for me, a lot of my friends aren’t enjoying college but I feel like I’m really working towards my future hopefully as a professional graphic designer”.

We are confident that Lauren has a bright future ahead of her and look forward to seeing a job she is solely responsible for with our guidance going live, whether that be printed or digital. Our guess is that won’t be as long as you’d think.
