Celebrating British Science Week at Leicester College

Content

From 9 -18 March is British Science Week. The week is actually ten days celebrating the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and maths. It’s an opportunity for both young people and career changers to find out about more about jobs in the sciences. It’s also an opportunity for learning more about the STEM sector more generally.

Sadly, this week also saw the death of Britain’s most celebrated scientist, Stephen Hawking.

Supporting Girls into STEM

At Leicester College, we participated with a Girls into STEM event featuring inspirational speakers encouraging the next generation of young women to consider a career in the sector.

With only 21% of STEM roles in the UK held by women, Britain is missing out on swathes of female potential and talent.

Pictured are girls from secondary schools taking part in the event in Science.

Our event took place on 13 March with students from five local schools. The keynote address was given by Dr Suzie Imber of Leicester University. Among other things, Dr Imber is a rower, mountaineer, astronaut, and Associate Professor in space physics. In 2017, she also won the BBC2 series Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?

Dr Imber’s inspirational talk covered coping with failure and trying different things outside the classroom to fill gaps in your cv.

The day also included workshops in STEM fields as diverse as science, accountancy, computing, motor vehicle, engineering, and construction.

Science Courses at Leicester College

If a career in STEM sounds appealing to you, Leicester College could be the place to start. We’ve got an applied science BTEC, as well as an applied sciences foundation diploma. If you’re looking to go down an academic route, Access courses are for adult students (19+) without A levels or other level 3 qualifications who want to go to university. There’s a dedicated Access course for health professionals as well as a science Access designed for those who want to go on to study biology, pharmacology, radiotherapy, chemistry, or other science-based degrees.
