Boost your business with an industry placement student

Content

For years students have completed work experience placements to gain vital business and industry skills. Now students taking T Levels will undertake a significant, 350 hour industry placement. The placement will enhance their learning and provide the opportunity for students to practise technical skills and knowledge in a real life setting. It also helps them to develop behaviours and social skills that are required in a workplace. T levels begin as a pilot in 2020. Leicester will begin to deliver T levels in 2021.

In preparation for this, we began piloting industry placement for some of our students in 2018/19. We have worked with dozens of employers in a variety of sectors so far, matching students to the needs of the employer. One business which has taken students on an industry placement is the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EMAS).

Oliver Barlow, a level 2 motor vehicle repair student, went to EMAS to complete his placement. Oliver said: “I really enjoyed my industry placement. It has developed my understanding and practical ability in the workshop. I’ve carried out services on the fleet vehicles – checking blue lights and brakes, and repairing faults when they are found. I also helped other mechanics in the workshops on jobs, which has helped me to broaden my knowledge.

“As well as learning things, the placement has opened up opportunities for the future as employers look for experience.”

Oliver’s supervisor was pleased with the help the department has received from the students. He said: “I think an industry placement is good way to bring young people into work. It helps them to see how we work, what’s expected and fills that gap from the classroom to the working environment.”
