What is an Access course?

Access to Higher Education courses are for adults aged 19+ returning to education, who don’t have the traditional qualifications needed to get onto a university level course.

At Leicester College, Access courses are studied for one year full time and are available in a range of subjects including business, computing, engineering, science and social sciences, humanities and video and photography. They are designed specifically for adults so you will be studying alongside other adults.

You might be concerned about the costs of studying but you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to pay your fees. And if you do go on to a university level course after completing your Access course you won’t have to pay back the loan for your Access courses – which could save you £3928.00!

Access courses and UCAS points

Universities and colleges will usually ask for you to have a certain number of UCAS points to get onto particular courses. With an Access course you earn UCAS points in the same way you do with A levels or BTECs – the higher your grades the more points you get.

With an Access course, you could earn a maximum of 144 UCAS points – which is the same as getting 3 As at A level.
