Background in musical theatre leads to place at prestigious drama school
Before joining Leicester College, Jackson Davinson was studying at Rawlins Academy in Quorn and had planned to continue into the sixth form. However, after thoroughly enjoying the school's production of ‘Grease’, he had a sudden change of heart and decided to move to Leicester College and join the Musical Theatre course.
Why the course at Leicester College?
"The teachers at Leicester College are incredibly nurturing and inspiring. They’re easy to get along with and treat you like a professional from day one. The skills I learned from them have stayed with me throughout my first term at ArtsEd,” Jackson comments.
“I often used the dance studios and music rooms whenever I could. The facilities are fantastic, always clean and maintained to industry standards.
“I really admired Gavin Creel, the American musical theatre performer. Though he has sadly passed, I was in awe of his charisma and voice. After taking part in our production of ‘Grease’ and following Gavin’s work, I knew musical theatre was what I wanted to pursue."
Standout moments on the course
Jackson continues: "A standout moment for me was the productions and the schedules leading up to them, as well as our musical theatre skills class, where we sang and performed for each other.
“It helped me discover confidence and abilities I didn’t know I had, whilst also giving me valuable experience and knowledge for pursuing higher education at drama school."
Next steps and future aspirations
"I’m one of just 20 people offered a place on the foundation course at the prestigious ArtsEd in Chiswick, London,” explains Jackson.
“I received several BA offers from drama schools, but I believe a foundation course at such an elite institution will really benefit me, helping to build a strong base in musical theatre. My hope is to progress to the three-year degree course next year.
“I’m incredibly excited to move away and enjoy my own space, but I’m also anxious about leaving my family, as I will miss them a lot.”
Recommending the course to others
“I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to build confidence and develop a strong foundation in musical theatre skills, especially for those planning to attend drama school," concludes Jackson.
