Leicester College is a British Council approved International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) test centre.

What is IELTS?

IELTS is the world’s most popular and widely-used English proficiency test; measuring the learner’s ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and accreditation purposes.

IMPORTANT: If you are applying for a test for UK Visa purposes please read before applying for Language Tests (SELT) for UK visa purposes. These took effect on 6th April 2015.

If you make a visa application to stay in or move to the UK, you need to be aware of changes made by United Kingdom Visas & Immigration (UKVI).

IELTS at Leicester College

Leicester College is the only IELTS test centre in the region, so we are the only place for you to take your test in Leicester city. We offer part time IELTS preparation training in readiness for your testing, which help to guide you through the process – IELTS training can be packaged with other ESOL courses to create a fulltime programme of study.

How to Apply for IELTS Test

You can apply online at the Leicester College page of the IELTS website https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/leicestercollege.  The test costs £149, and can be paid in person at the Information Centres of any of our campuses, or over the phone by calling +44 (0)116 224 2240 and asking for the Information Centre.

You will also need to bring in your passport for us to photocopy. You can drop these into the IELTS Office at our Abbey Park Campus, or you can scan and email a copy to ielts@leicestercollege.ac.uk.

When and Where are IELTS Tests Available?

Testing takes place on Saturdays at Leicester College’s Abbey Park Campus:

Test Day Schedule

The IELTS test day schedule is very precise, so you need to be at our Abbey Park Campus by 8.30am at the latest on the day of your test. If you are late you will not be able to sit the test and your fee will not be refunded.

  • 8:30am – Registration and Introduction

Remember you will need to bring your passport – driving licences, bank cards, hospital cards and International Student ID cards are not acceptable forms of identification.

You will then be given your Candidate Number and a speaking test time for the afternoon, which will be between 1.20pm and 5.30pm.

Then you will sit:

Listening Test – 45 minutes

Reading Test – 1 hour

Writing Test – 1 hour

  • Lunch Break

Please note that the cafeteria at Leicester College will not be open, and candidates are advised to bring refreshments with them. Alternatively, there are several restaurants and food outlets on Belgrave Road, which is a five-minute walk away.

Can I cancel my test?

Candidates can cancel their test more than five weeks before their test date and will receive a refund, minus an administration fee of £34.75. Candidates who cancel their test fewer than five weeks before their test date will receive no refund.

Can I transfer my test date?

Candidates may transfer test dates if they notify the Test Centre five weeks in advance of their selected test date. An administration fee of £34.35 is payable. The transferred date must be arranged within three months of the original date.

Candidates who wish to transfer fewer than five weeks prior to their test date will be treated as a cancellation, and receive no refund. To transfer to another test date candidates will have to re-apply and pay an additional test fee.

How can I query my results?

If you want your IELTS test re-marked you will need to request this within six weeks of your test date. The re-marking fee is £60, and you can have one or more parts re-marked for this price. If your test mark changes to a higher band as a result of the re-mark you will receive a full refund.

Candidates must complete an Enquiry of Results (EOR) form and hand this in with their original Test Report Form and payment to the IELTS Test Centre.

When will I find out my results?

Your test results will be available 13 calendar days after your test date. Your Test Result Form will be sent to the address you give on your application form – although if you prefer to collect your Test Result Form from the Test Centre you can contact us in advance to arrange this.

You will receive one copy of your Test Report Form so keep it safe, as the Test Centre is not permitted to issue a replacement.

Candidates can request for up to five additional copies of their Test Report Form to be sent to recognising organisations free of charge.
