We have intensive courses for Entry 2/3 and level 1/2. Our intensive courses are based at the City Skills Centre. These are face to face or online. They run from 9.30am to 3pm, one day a week for 11 weeks (including exam).
The next course start date is the week beginning 8th April.
Functional mathematics ensures that individuals can use numbers, measure shapes and space, and data handling problem-solving skills competently and apply them to challenges within everyday life.
What You'll Learn
At Entry level, skills learnt include basic practical maths that you will be able to use in your everyday life. These will cover simple calculations, fractions, measurement and how to use tables and charts.
As you develop these skills, you will become more confident in recognising how maths can be applied to day-to-day situations. You will demonstrate your skills for certification through classroom-based assessment.
At levels 1 and 2, skills learnt include being able to recognise how everyday situations can be represented using maths. You will learn how to calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages, how to create tables and charts, how to use metric measurements and how to work out averages, amongst other things.
You will develop mathematical tools and operations; be able to apply these procedures appropriately to a situation or problem; be able to interpret results and consider the accuracy and conclusions to be drawn from this information.
Our classes are for adults, and you must be 19 or above on 31st August 2023. There are no formal entry requirements.
When you apply, you will be invited to attend an assessment session. One of our tutors will talk to you, and you will complete an assessment in order to find out your level and identify the most appropriate class for you.
You are expected to attend every session, work independently and achieve the qualification within the agreed timescales.
Our classes are free to most learners who do not already have an English level 2 functional skills qualification or English GCSE A*-C (grade 4).
How you will be assessed
At entry level you will complete a maths assessment within the class, which will be assessed by your tutor. At level 1 and level 2 you will undertake one formal exam. The functional skills maths exam takes 2 hours.
Tuition Fees (19+): £0.00
If the course is longer than one year the total fees are for the first year only and further fees may apply in future years. All fees are based on a ‘home’ learner status. Please contact us for information on overseas fees.

Course and Career progression
Successful achievement on the course will allow you to progress onto a higher level of Functional Skills or apply for GCSE maths.
This qualification will help you if you are considering applying for an apprenticeship. It may improve your chances of getting work or progressing within work, or moving onto other courses, this will enable you to support your children more effectively.
