Course Overview

You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. This is an exciting new full time course that combines the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives Technical Diploma in Law with a BTEC Diploma in Business to form a Study Programme. The aim is to give students a grounding in Law and Business from which to springboard themselves in to a range of potential careers.

The law course is linked to a professional body and from this course membership of this body will enable you to progress further in the legal field to convert this qualification into a Professional Diploma at level 4.

The Business Diploma will give you a huge insight into all aspects of Business and if you decided to follow the Business rather than the legal route this qualification has given you the foundation to move into many aspects of Business.

Whether your chosen path is law or business, this course will give you an excellent grounding. By the end of the course you will have developed exceptional skills, some of which include:
• the ability to research effectively;
• the skill of academic writing as well as professional drafting;
• the art of creating a coherent, persuasive argument;
• the skill of critical analysis; and
• the competence to be able to synthesise complex concepts and communicate them effectively.
Both qualifications lead to UCAS points and would therefore give you access to University. The study programme will give you the equivalent of three A levels.

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above.

What You'll Learn

Year 1

You will study SIX law units over the two years of the programme, 3 in each year. The law units are:
Unit 1 Introduction to Law and the Legal System in England and Wales
Unit 2 – Practical Legal Skills
Unit 3 – Law of Contract
Unit 4 – Tort Law
Unit 5 – Law of Crime
Unit 6 – Land and Property Law

In addition you will then study 12 Business Units over the two years. Some of these units will include, Business Environment, Business Resources, Marketing, Communication in Business, Teambuilding and Managing a Business Event.

Work Experience will very much be part of the programme and the opportunity to be placed in law firms and complete your work experience with them is integral to the development of your skills in the legal field.

Year 2

In year two of the programme you will complete your three law units and your 6 Business Units. The law units are set as above, but the business units which you study will be agreed upon with you during the end of year one. There are many options to choose from including law units, recruitment and selection, IT skills, retail skills as well as finance and accounting.

In addition your study programme will continue to have work experience and also opportunities to become involved in enterprise activities which will improve your skills in communication, networking and self assurance all of which will make you more employable.

Entry Requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. Five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, to include English and maths is required. These entry requirements are there to ensure that you are completely focused on the course and its demands, rather than having to resit GCSEs.

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed in a variety of different ways depending on the units being assessed.
Your law units will all be assessed externally with one multiple choice test (Unit1), four examinations and one Synoptic Assessment (Unit 2). The synoptic assessment draws together learning and assesses your ability to apply knowledge and skills in an integrated way. You will have passed all formative examinations and completed your Work experience in a legal firm before taking this Assessment.
Your Business units will all be assessed internally via assignments, presentations, video’s, practical skills and written work.

All units you will be allowed to sit twice during the course in order to achieve at the highest grade that you can.

What Happens Next

Apply online via UCAS Progress or the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
