Course Overview

This accredited qualification is suitable for you if you are 19+ and want to improve your knowledge of the importance of working with people with dementia and is applicable to a variety of different work and personal environments.

If successful you will gain a nationally recognised level 1 Award in Introduction to Dementia which is valuable evidence to show employers that you understand how to manage dementia clients successfully.

Particularly suitable if youare are returning to work after a period of unemployment who wish to improve your care or customer service skills, and to update your information on key current legislation.

You will need to be committed to complete a full day of learning (9am – 4pm). This is a classroom-based, one day course which is offered on a regular basis throughout the year (50 weeks of the year including non-term times).

What You'll Learn

Year 1

During this one day course, you will take part in a variety of different learning activities, discussion, research and watching short videos where you will be able to:

1) Know why it is important to recognise and value individuals with dementia
2) Research and know how to use a person-centred approach to support individuals appropriately
3) Understand the main causes of dementia and the effects on the individual and others
4) Understand and know how to provide effective methods of communication and identify the impact of negative communicating styles

Entry Requirements

This is a level 1 course and although there are no formal entry requirements, a reasonable level of literacy is expected i.e. you can write and speak to make yourself understood.

How you will be assessed

You will complete a variety of short practical and written tasks that will be formally assessed by your tutor to create a portfolio of written evidence.
