Course Overview
Carpenters work with wood on building sites or in customers’ homes to fit or repair doors, window frames, staircases, floorboards, cupboards, roof trusses and partitions. They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing. Once completed you can progress on to level 3 Advanced.
An apprenticeship is a job with training. You will be employed at least 30 hours a week, with 80% of your working hours in your day-to-day role, and the remaining 20% of your time engaged in training or study.
What You'll Learn
Year 1
Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, finishing, positioning and securing.
– Install door and window frames, door and hatch linings, floor joist coverings, straight partitions and straight staircases.
– Install doors, ironmongery, service encasements, wall and floor units, fitments, cladding and staircase components.
– Erect inclined roofs with gables, joists, roof coverings and roof components. Repair or replace frames, mouldings, doors, windows, door and window ironmongery, roofing components, guttering and downpipes, and window components.
– Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment.
Year 2
How to create drawings and cutting lists.
How to mark out and cut traditional joints.
How to manufacture various carpentry components e.g. windows, doors and staircases.
How to fix various carpentry components e.g. floorboards, cupboards and roof trusses.
How to calculate and cost materials.
How to set up and use a range of hand and power tools.
Entry Requirements
English and maths GCSE Desirable
How you will be assessed
End-point assessment (EPA) is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship. The apprentice must show their learning to an independent end-point assessor and the grades available are distinction, pass or fail.

You could progress on to level 3 Site Carpentry. Once completed you can progress on to management courses or the Built Environment – Site Managers route.
