Students get help to construct careers

Content

A city college joined forces with a construction firm to invite learners behind the scenes at a major city development.

In all, 40 students from Leicester College, studying for trade-based vocational and BTEC construction qualifications, took part in supervised tours of a £6 million office development in Grove Park, Enderby.

Two firms, Stepnell of Rugby and Bicester’s Brackley Investments, are building the steel-framed, three-storey building for My Home Move, a leading provider of conveyancing services which will create 100 well-paid jobs at the site.

Focusing on brickwork and roofing, the visits were part of the college’s “employability week”, giving students insights into a “live” construction site and enabling them to talk to a range of professionals at the scheme.
Paul Hirscher, director of construction at the college, said: “Working with local businesses is crucial for the development of our construction learners.

“This type of scheme helps students get their foot on to the career ladder.”

Through its ongoing partnership with the college, Stepnell will this year also provide 34 work placements for students on the My Home Move building, giving them the chance to gain industry experience under close supervision by qualified professionals.
