Leicester College is celebrating the success of its apprenticeship courses ahead of National Apprenticeship Week from 3-9 February 2020.

The College is the largest apprenticeship training delivery organisation in Leicester and there are currently over 1,500 Leicester College students working with local businesses in apprentice roles.

Leicester College’s apprenticeship courses help students to learn new skills and gain experience to succeed in their chosen career, whilst being paid an apprenticeship wage, plus the national minimum wage. The length of apprenticeships depend on the level and area of employment, and range from 12-48 months.

All apprenticeships involve 80 per cent of the student’s time spent at their workplace and types of study format include day release to attend college, block release at college and study time away from their day-to-day role within the workplace.

Tia Whelan, who studies at Leicester College on the Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship course, is currently working with UKGas, a leading home service partner in the East Midlands.

Tia Whelan said: “I’ve had the ultimate in support from Tina and the apprenticeships team at Leicester College, sorting this apprenticeship for me at UKGas and nominating me for awards.

“I enjoy my role at UKGas and I have learnt so much whilst completing this apprenticeship. I enjoy being an ambassador for the college, women in construction and promoting construction roles, too. The apprenticeship course has really helped to boost my confidence. I’m doing the thing I enjoy every day, learning different kind of trades and earning at the same time.”

Tina Jivraj, Project Manager for Apprenticeships at Leicester College added: “Our apprenticeship programme provides an ideal foundation for students to study for a qualification that’s relevant to their chosen industry, receive on-the-job training from industry experts and also get paid from the start.

“We’re so proud of all of our apprentices and it’s so rewarding that students like Tia are making such a success of their roles that they’ve now become real ambassadors for the programme.”
