The former Commonwealth and European super-bantamweight champion is back in the news after he announced his plans to return to the ring from retirement earlier this year.

Rendall was contacted by Shelby Calow and Shahanna Sheikh, both enrolled on the  BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media course, who requested to interview him as part of their core project.

To their delight he agreed.

He arrived at Leicester College’s St Margaret’s Campus to film the interview.  Following him was a news crew from BBC East Midlands Today who were making a film of the boxer’s return to the ring.

Shelbi thought an interview with the boxer would be perfect-timing for her course, especially as he’s been making recent headlines. She used her family contacts to get Rendall on board.

She explains: “Both Shahanna and I wanted a high profile interview. We’ve been planning it for a long time. Once Rendall had confirmed we were so excited. Then he told us about the BBC who also wanted to film him, which was even better for us.

Asked if she was nervous before her interview, she explained: “I was at first as it’s the first time I’ve interviewed someone famous but I felt quickly at ease and just focused on my questions.”

Shahanna added: “It went really well. Rendall was really down to earth and was very open about his life and work, which made the whole experience really good for us.

“It’s nice that a sporting star like him is prepared to take time out from his life and come and help us on our course.”

The former bin-man turned boxer said both Shelbi and Shahanna were a delight to work with.

He explained: “They were both very professional and they put some tough questions in front of me. They had both done their research and knew what they were talking about.

“I can see them both having a very successful careers and wish them well for the future.”
